When Edin Dzeko suffered a recurrence of a calf injury in the warm-up prior to Saturday's encounter with Leicester City, it appeared to close off options for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers. In reality, it could open up a whole new array of choices from Manchester City's squad, as Manuel Pellegrini turns to tactics to solve his injury crisis.
Dzeko had seemed the obvious FPL replacement for the free-scoring Sergio Aguero. With the Bosnian sidelined and Stevan Jovetic also troubled by a muscle injury, it appeared that any route into City's attacking potential over Christmas was restricted to the raids and dead-ball threat of Yaya Toure.
Pellegrini's intention to tweak the City setup to accommodate a "false nine" attacker may just open up other avenues, however.
The Chilean has this week expressed his intention to assess the suitability of David Silva,Samir Nasri or even James Milner for the role of a withdrawn striker. This "false 9" player will be the furthest forward central attacker, charged with dropping deep to receive the ball, with City relying on midfield runners from deep to inflict damage on opponents.
Pellegrini has indicated that he will spend this week in training assessing the credentials of his candidates. FPL managers will keenly await the outcome and can now consider the impact of this tactical tweak on our assessment of City's midfield assets.
Nasri's form is already sparkling, with two assists in his last three outings, while Silva has long possessed the tools to return ample FPL points, without perhaps delivering on a consistent basis. Priced at just 5.4, Milner is the most intriguing option.
David Silva could be an option for Man City's 'false nine' position
Milner has created a goal scoring opportunity every 25 minutes - more frequently than any other midfielder in the Barclays Premier League. If that form is rewarded with the responsibility to adapt to this new attacking role, Milner's stock would be boosted considerably and FPL managers will, at last, be forced to take notice.
In addition, FPL managers must consider that the City midfield will be transformed as the main source of goals. Toure's appeal will remain strong, while Pellegrini's efforts to retainFrank Lampard's services will take on fresh impetus given the new emphasis on attacking runs from deep.
Defensively, we should also expect to see a continued upturn. City have conceded just a single goal in their last four league matches and, even with captain Vincent Kompany sidelined through injury, a false nine setup would lend itself to further shut-outs. City will be focused on scoring goals to earn a result and nothing more - retaining their run of recent resilience.
Pellegrini must prove his worth by adapting his approach to his restricted resources. FPL managers may just profit by revising their own strategies to exploit the new-look City.
