Cole: Di Maria money well spent

Andy Cole has been bowled over by Angel Di Maria's brilliant start to his Manchester United career.

The former Reds striker can recall his strike-partner Dwight Yorke enjoying a similarly fruitful beginning to life at Old Trafford but admits the Argentinian appears to be worth the record £59.7million outlay after adapting seamlessly to the Barclays Premier League.

Di Maria bagged his third goal for the club in the win over Everton and has already been voted United's Player of the Month for September.

"I'll be honest, the only person I've seen come to Manchester United and make such a good start was Dwight Yorke," Cole told ManUtd.com. "I think he scored two goals on his home debut and another goal in the game after that."

As a record buy himself, back in early 1995, Cole was asked if the increased focus has any impact and can weigh heavily on a player's shoulders. 

"You look at that, you take it, you get on with it and enjoy the pressure," he stated. "He has played so well and given a little bit of spark. It's what you always want when you come for that kind of money, everyone is expecting something special and he's done just that.

"I think when you come to a football club like Manchester United, there is always going to be pressure but he has played for another massive club in Real Madrid.

  Giggs says Reds must hit top form

Manchester United assistant manager Ryan Giggs says the Reds must take heart from recent performances and results and wants the team to continue edging towards the peak of their powers during the most testing part of the season so far.

Two hard-fought wins over West Ham and Everton in the last couple of weeks have lifted the Reds to fourth in the table. West Brom are next up on Monday night at The Hawthorns, before a home meeting with Chelsea and away trips to Manchester City and Arsenal in the space of a month during October and November.

Giggs says there have been promising signs of late on the pitch, but maintains that the squad will need to be as close to top gear as possible for the upcoming challenges.

"These are the games you want to be involved in and play in. And they will be a test," he told ManUtd.com at the HMV Football Extravaganza earlier this week.

"Chelsea have probably been the standout team so far with City just behind them and we want to be up there testing ourselves against those teams. We feel that we do belong up there but we perhaps haven't shown it consistently this season.

"We've shown glimpses over the last few weeks and hopefully we'll have a lot of players coming back for those games. The form has slowly begun to get better and better and we want to hit form going into those matches."

Giggs is working hard with Louis van Gaal and the rest of the coaching staff to ensure the best possible preparation for the players ahead of the imminent clashes. And while nothing can replace the buzz of being involved in them as a player, Giggs insists he is loving his new career as van Gaal's assistant.

"It's a great experience for me to work under such a top manager who has such a good track record," he added. "I'm really enjoying it and the manager has been really good with me.

"I'm doing as much as I can to make sure we're in form and ready for each game. A lot of work goes into that and we're slowly seeing the benefits of it."

Fans back van Gaal's Reds in five-game test

Manchester United fans are backing Louis van Gaal’s men to stride confidently into the most testing run of games so far this season and emerge with a healthy number of points.

Monday’s match against West Bromwich Albion kicks off a five-match run which also takes in tests against Chelsea, Manchester City, Crystal Palace and Arsenal, so we asked ManUtd.com readers how many points they expect van Gaal’s side to pick up during this spell.

With 15 points on offer and the challenge of facing three recognised rivals, it’s a crucial period in assessing the progress of the Dutchman’s side.

After back-to-back victories over West Ham and Everton took United into the league's top four for the first time in almost 14 months, there is a growing sense of optimism as the Reds head back to action following the recent international break.

An overwhelming majority – 85 per cent of the fans who took our poll – believe United will claim nine or more points from the 15 available in those five matches. From that cross-section, more than a quarter of supporters reckon the Reds will take 13 points or more, while the vast majority opted for the 9-12 points category.

Only one per cent of voters pessimistically claimed the Reds would notch five points or fewer, but far more supporters seem to be relishing the tests that the next few weeks will bring.
