When Edin Dzeko suffered a recurrence of a calf injury in the warm-up prior to Saturday's encounter with Leicester City, it appeared to close off options for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers. In reality, it could open up a whole new array of choices from Manchester City's squad, as Manuel Pellegrini turns to tactics to solve his injury crisis.
Dzeko had seemed the obvious FPL replacement for the free-scoring Sergio Aguero. With the Bosnian sidelined and Stevan Jovetic also troubled by a muscle injury, it appeared that any route into City's attacking potential over Christmas was restricted to the raids and dead-ball threat of Yaya Toure.
Pellegrini's intention to tweak the City setup to accommodate a "false nine" attacker may just open up other avenues, however.
The Chilean has this week expressed his intention to assess the suitability of David Silva,Samir Nasri or even James Milner for the role of a withdrawn striker. This "false 9" player will be the furthest forward central attacker, charged with dropping deep to receive the ball, with City relying on midfield runners from deep to inflict damage on opponents.
Pellegrini has indicated that he will spend this week in training assessing the credentials of his candidates. FPL managers will keenly await the outcome and can now consider the impact of this tactical tweak on our assessment of City's midfield assets.
Nasri's form is already sparkling, with two assists in his last three outings, while Silva has long possessed the tools to return ample FPL points, without perhaps delivering on a consistent basis. Priced at just 5.4, Milner is the most intriguing option.
David Silva could be an option for Man City's 'false nine' position
Milner has created a goal scoring opportunity every 25 minutes - more frequently than any other midfielder in the Barclays Premier League. If that form is rewarded with the responsibility to adapt to this new attacking role, Milner's stock would be boosted considerably and FPL managers will, at last, be forced to take notice.
In addition, FPL managers must consider that the City midfield will be transformed as the main source of goals. Toure's appeal will remain strong, while Pellegrini's efforts to retainFrank Lampard's services will take on fresh impetus given the new emphasis on attacking runs from deep.
Defensively, we should also expect to see a continued upturn. City have conceded just a single goal in their last four league matches and, even with captain Vincent Kompany sidelined through injury, a false nine setup would lend itself to further shut-outs. City will be focused on scoring goals to earn a result and nothing more - retaining their run of recent resilience.
Pellegrini must prove his worth by adapting his approach to his restricted resources. FPL managers may just profit by revising their own strategies to exploit the new-look City.

iBET SHARE FPL Scout Extra: Carroll on song for festive schedule

Andy Carroll has spent the past four seasons burdened by an inflated price tag and hamstrung by a series of long-term injuries. However, when fitness and confidence align, the talismanic West Ham United forward remains a devastating weapon for Fantasy Premier League managers.
A pair of towering headers in the last outing at the Boleyn Ground against Swansea City – Carroll's first goals since March – presented ample evidence that he is back as a force. West Ham's flourishing season can provide a suitable platform for him to thrive further.
This weekend, Carroll will face up to Nigel Pearson's Leicester City: a side that have not quite matched the profile of their manager. As a player, Pearson was an uncompromising centre-back and yet his struggling team have not convinced in this area.
The Foxes make the trip to east London having conceded more headed goal attempts than any Barclays Premier League side. Crucially, Leicester have also allowed 81 goal attempts from set-plays – again the highest figure in the league.
Andy Carroll scored two towering headers against Swansea

The Hammers undoubtedly have the weaponry to exploit this. Manager Sam Allardyce is an advocate of maximising set-pieces, and his team have created 76 goal attempts from dead-ball situations, the highest in the BPL. In Carroll, he has a player to punish the Foxes' frailties.
Since the striker's return in Gameweek 12, Allardyce has tweaked his tactics to play to Carroll's strengths. He has enjoyed more touches in the opponents' penalty box than any other forward in this five-match spell and only Swansea's Wilfried Bony has fired in more goal attempts (26 to Carroll's 21).
Diafra Sakho's six goals in nine league starts make him a more obvious West Ham target for FPL managers. The case for Carroll is, though, a convincing one when you consider Saturday's scenario and his meagre 1.6% ownership.
Carroll's power in the air will be a major threat to a back four that have struggled to convince and his form suggests he will convert opportunities that will inevitably come his way.
Allardyce and Pearson will be making very different plans for Carroll ahead of the weekend. FPL managers may do well to devise their own.

Ronald Koeman feels his Southampton side could be classed as favourites going into Monday's Barclays Premier Leauge match with Manchester United.
The two sides are separated by just a point in the Barclays Premier League, although Koeman's side have lost their last two matches against Manchester City and Arsenal. Two of Southampton's four league defeats have come in the past week and United would leapfrog Monday's opponents with a win.
Koeman, who is without Jack Cork (ankle), Morgan Schneiderlin (groin) and James Ward-Prowse (ankle), warned that Louis van Gaal's men should not expect an easy ride, suggesting United may not be considered favourites as has been the case in previous seasons. The former Feyenoord coach also dismissed suggestions there would be any ill-feeling between himself and Van Gaal despite disagreements during their time at Ajax.
"If we [Koeman and Van Gaal] see each other we shake hands,” Koeman said. “He's a great coach, it was difficult at the start but they are on the way back.
"They have shown that in the performances of the team and have won the last four games, it's a nice challenge for us. Normally, if Southampton play Manchester United, Manchester United is the favourite, but they know it will be a tough game.
"Our performance against Arsenal was a good one, much better than the [Manchester] City game, but in the Premier League, there isn't an easy game to win."
While Southampton come into Monday's meeting after back-to-back defeats, United will target five Barclays Premier League wins in a row and aided by the return of captain Wayne Rooney. The striker missed the midweek home win over Stoke City with a knock to the knee suffered in the win over Hull City last weekend, but has been passed fit to return.
Van Gaal, who can also call on defender Jonny Evans again after he recovered from a foot injury, is not paying too much attention to Southampton's lofty position at this stage of the campaign.
"It's the same in every country,” he said. “Every country always has at the beginning of the season a surprise.
"Zwolle, a club in the Netherlands, was leading the competition in the Dutch league for six or eight matches. It's always like that.
"But as I have said, what always matters is the end of May. That counts. Now it's not so important. They have a very good squad. I know a lot of [Southampton's] players and a lot of players were offered to us."

Substitute Papiss Cisse struck twice as Newcastle United secured a 2-1 win to end Chelsea's 23-match unbeaten run in all competitions and inflict their first Barclays Premier League defeat of the season.

The Senegal international scored four minutes after coming on in the second half before adding what proved to be a decisive second goal with 12 minutes to play, ensuring Jose Mourinho has still never masterminded a league win at St James' Park.

Chelsea dominated the first half but failed to find a way through, with Willian and Cesc Fabregas both passing up presentable chances.

They were made to pay after 57 minutes, as Cisse netted his sixth BPL goal of the season by tapping in Sammy Ameobi's cross.

Cisse then doubled Newcastle's advantage, and although Didier Drogba pulled a goal back after Steven Taylor had been sent off for a second bookable offence, for the second time in the space of a week Chelsea dropped points in the north-east.

Defeat enables Manchester City to close the gap to just three points if they beat Everton later on Saturday.

Newcastle were able to celebrate a shock victory in which goalkeeper Jak Alnwick made some vital saves after coming on to make his debut at half-time following an injury to Rob Elliot.

Alan Pardew rang the changes after Newcastle's draw at Burnley on Tuesday, with Fabricio Coloccini and Remy Cabella two of five players coming in.

Chelsea welcomed back leading scorer Diego Costa from suspension at the expense of Drogba, while John Obi Mikel replaced the suspended Nemanja Matic in midfield.

The visitors dominated possession in the first half and had their first sight of goal after 10 minutes, when Willian fired narrowly wide of Elliot's goal after good work from Costa and Eden Hazard.

Chances continued to come for Chelsea but Willian again missed with a curling effort 18 minutes in, before Fabregas saw a low shot deflected wide.

Having soaked up plenty of pressure, Newcastle eventually began to pose more of an attacking threat and Thibaut Courtois had be alert to deny Jack Colback in the 31st minute, the midfielder collecting an Ayoze Perez pass inside the penalty area only to be denied by the Belgium goalkeeper.

Newcastle's goalkeeping problems worsened at half-time as Elliot, in for the injured Tim Krul, limped off and was replaced by 21-year-old Alnwick.

The debutant commanded his area well and having weathered another spell of Chelsea pressure, Newcastle opened the scoring.

Ameobi made good ground down the left, Cahill failed to deal with his low cross and Cisse had the simple job of tapping home from close range.

Mourinho introduced Andre Schurrle and Drogba from the bench and Chelsea began to lay siege on the Newcastle goal.

Valiant defending from Coloccini and Taylor denied Costa on the turn, and Hazard saw a low shot hit the post.

Newcastle then punished the leaders on the counter attack as Colback found Moussa Sissoko, who was unable to finish but when the ball rolled to Cisse the striker made no mistake.

Taylor was then dismissed for a second bookable offence after committing a foul on Schurrle and Drogba headed in Fabregas’s 83rd-minute free-kick moments later, setting up a tense finale.

Alnwick came to Newcastle's rescue in the closing minutes with saves to deny Costa and Filipe Luis and Newcastle held on for all three points.
