Gary Cahill was delighted we maintained our unbeaten start to the season courtesy of a 2-1 Capital One Cup win over Bolton Wanderers.
The Blues set up a fourth round tie away at Shrewsbury Town courtesy of goals from Kurt Zouma and Oscar, which came either side of a Matt Mills equaliser.
Cahill, one of only two players – along with Cesar Azpilicueta - to retain his place in the side from Sunday’s draw at Manchester City, was pleased we came through the game against his former club victorious.
‘Any player will tell you that when you’re playing against your old club there’s that added bit of emotion,’ he said.
‘You try not to let it affect you and play your normal game but I’m a professional and the most important thing is that we won the game. They made it tough for us but thankfully we won.’
In truth, it was a dominant display by Jose Mourinho’s side, who could have easily won by a more convincing margin.
The impressive Andre Schurrle was denied by the woodwork twice, while Andy Lonergan, the Bolton goalkeeper, was in inspired form.
‘We had a lot of chances, mainly created by good individual play,’ said Cahill. ‘Their goalkeeper pulled off a fantastic save from Schurrle’s free-kick, and another one from Remy.
‘Schurrle created a lot for himself, I thought he played well, cutting inside and firing shots at goal. Sometimes when you play at home against a team who aren’t in the Premier League, you have more to lose than win.
‘People expect you to win the game and it’s not that easy. There have already been a few shocks and thankfully we weren’t one of them.’
Another of Cahill’s former clubs, Aston Villa, are the visitors to Stamford Bridge on Saturday in the Premier League.
Paul Lambert’s side were beaten 3-0 at home by Arsenal last Saturday, but prior to that result had been in fine form.
‘I had a great time at Villa, more than anything with the youth team,’ said Cahill. ‘I owe a lot to them, they brought me through and I had a great time, so I’m looking forward to it.
‘They’ve had a great start to the season, apart from their last result, so it’s going to be another tough test for us.
‘It’s great to have a winning mentality, if you have a couple of sticky results it puts the pressure on going into games but at the moment we’re unbeaten, we’re going well and we should have confidence, especially playing in front of our own fans at Stamford Bridge.
